On 30th Sept, 2012 a news circulated about death of Griselda Blanco. The news stated that Blanco and her pregnant daughter-in-law went to the Cardiso butcher shop on the corner street in Medellin. As she exited an assassin on a motorcycle shot her twice, killing her.

Who was Griselda Blanco?

Griselda Blanco Restrepo popularly known as “Black Widow” or “Cocaine Godmother” was a Colombian drug lord who was pre-eminent in the cocaine-based drug trade and underworld of Miami, US during 1970s and early 2000s. The early life of Blanco was not good she was sexually abused by her Mother’s boyfriend at the age of 19. Reports also says that she early life included crime as she kidnapped, ransomed and shot a child when she was 11.

Griselda Blanco’s Early Life 

Blanco was born in Cartagena, Colombia on the country’s north coast. She and mother moved to Medellin when she was three years old and this exposed her to adopting criminal lifestyle at such early age. Blanco former lover ‘Charles Cosby’ told that when Blanco was 11 she allegedly kidnapped, attempted to ransom and shot a child in an upscale flatland neighborhood near her home. So it is  very clear that Blanco adapted a criminal lifestyle at a very young age. Before she turned 13 she was involved in activities of pick-pocket.

At the age of 19 Blanco ran escaped when from home when she was sexually abused by her mother’s boyfriend and then she resorted to stealing in Medellin till she was 20. It was also speculated that to help herself financially she was engaged in the prostitution but Blanco denied it.

What was Blanco’s business?

Blanco was a main figure in the establishment of the cocaine trade between Colombia and large North America cities like Miami and NY. In 1970 Blanco moved to Miami and there she made her reputation of her as a “Godmother” in drug activities. In April 1975 she was indicted on federal drug conspiracy charges along-with her 30 subordinates. Late 1970s and early 1980s Blanco was involved in the drug-related violence known as “Miami Drug War” or the “Cocaine Cowboy Wars” that  was the period when cocaine was trafficked more than cannabis. The distribution network earned $80 million per month that year.

Lets dig into personal life of Griselda Blanco

Blanco married three times and she had 4 sons. She and her first husband Carlos Trujillo had three sons together before Blanco was 21. Blanco had her youngest son Michael Corleone, she had him with her third husband Dario Sepulveda. Sepulveda left her in 1983 and returned to Colombia and kidnapped Michael when he Blanco disagreed over who would have custody. Blanco paid to have Sepulveda assassinated in Colombia and her son returned to her in the US.

According to the Miami News Times, “Michael’s father and older siblings were all killed before he reached adulthood. His mother was in prison for most of his childhood and teenage years and he was raised by his parental grandmother and legal guardians”.

How did Griselda Blanco died?

On 3rd Sept,2012 Blanco was shot death by an assassination twice who came on a motorcycle. The drive-by motorcycle shooting mimicked the same assassination style that Blanco was often credited with introducing to Miami during her drug reign.
