Ryan is often described as “the most powerful man” in modern television and signed the largest development deal in television history with Netflix. In Oct 2015 Ryan received the ‘Award of Inspiration’ from amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research for his contribution to television and film as well as his work in the fight against AIDS.

Ryan was born on Nov 9, 1965, in Indiana where he was raised in a Catholic family. He attended Catholic School from first grade to eighth grade and graduated from Warren Central High School. His mother J. Andy Murphy was a writer who wrote 5 books before retiring. Ryan described his mother as a “beauty queen who left it all to stay at home and take care of her two sons”. Ryan’s father worked in the newspaper industry as a circulation director.

At the age of 15 Ryan found out that he was gay. He went to the therapist after that and his therapist found out there was nothing wrong with Ryan. In an interview with Inside the Actors studio in 2012 Ryan disclosed that he secretly dated a lot of football players during his high school era.

Ryan Murphy went to Indiana University Bloomington where he graduated in journalism and was also a member of the Signing Hoosiers vocal ensemble. In 1986 he interned at The Washington Post where he was placed in the style section.

Ryan started his career working as a journalist for The Miami Herald, Los Angeles Times, and New York Daily News. Murphy started his career in television with the teen comedy series ‘Popular’. The series premiered on The WB on Sept 29, 1999, and ran for two seasons which ended in 2001. Then he created the FX drama series Nip/Tuck which premiered on July 18, 2003. In 2004 Ryan received his first Primetime Emmy Award.

In 2006 Ryan wrote the screenplay for and directed the film ‘Running with Scissors’. And like this Ryan made a number of series and received a number of awards till 2019. In June 2020, in honour of the 50th anniversary of the first LGBTQ Pride Parade, Queerty named him among the fifty heroes “leading the nation toward equality, acceptance and dignity for all people”. Ryan co-created with Ian Brennan, “Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffery Dahmer Story”, a ten-part miniseries that premiered on Netflix in Sept 2022. The series took #1 spot on Netflix in the first week of its release.

Ryan grew up in a Catholic household but is “done with church”, having left it, however he still occasionally goes to church. He serves on the National Advisory Board of Young Storytellers. During his interview in 1987 about his show Pose he describes his concern about HIV and how he kept on getting it check frequently in college days.

Ryan has been married to photographer David Miller since July 2012. They both have three sons born via surrogacy.
